HISTORY OF FOOTBALL NANAIMO
Intro
History of Football Nanaimo
Football Nanaimo has been part of the Nanaimo community for over 57 years. We were the first football club established in Nanaimo and continue to call Pioneer Park (May Richards Bennett Park) in North Nanaimo our home.
Early Years
The association was founded in the 1960s, bringing organized tackle football to local youth for the first time. Pioneer Park became our home field, and the tradition of football in Nanaimo began to grow. Over the decades, countless athletes, coaches, and volunteers have helped shape the culture of the sport here.
Growth & Evolution
Through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Football Nanaimo steadily grew, fielding Atom, Pee Wee, Junior Bantam, Bantam, and Midget teams. Many players moved on to play at higher levels, including high school, junior, university, and professional leagues. Our programs emphasized teamwork, discipline, and community involvement.
Modern Era
In 2019, Football Nanaimo embraced a new identity as the Football Nanaimo Seahawks, adopting new colours and uniforms. The Seahawks name reflects our west coast heritage and our close ties to Vancouver Island’s favourite NFL team, the Seattle Seahawks. Merchandise was introduced to give members and the community a way to proudly show support. We continue to focus on providing safe, inclusive, and competitive tackle football opportunities for youth across the region.
Community Impact
Generations of families have been involved in Football Nanaimo. Many alumni return as coaches, referees, and volunteers. The club remains a cornerstone for youth sport in Nanaimo, with a strong emphasis on mentorship and community pride.
